Tottenham Hotspur saw off Champions League rivals Red Star Belgrade with a stunning 5-0 victory last night with one Spurs player showing a vast improvement.
Harry Kane opened the scoring in the 9th minute with a strike before Heung-Min Son took over with two more goals before the end of the first half.
The Lilywhites didn’t let up as Erik Lamela notched up his 32nd Spurs goal in what was his 200th appearance for the club with Kane rounding off the scoring with his second and the side’s fifth in the 72nd minute.
The England international was in frightening form for Mauricio Pochettino’s side, having the most shots of any player on the pitch as he terrorised his Serbian counterparts (via WhoScored).
However, it was the £13.5m-rated (per Transfermarkt) Serge Aurier, who flew under the radar and produced a performance which hasn’t been seen the 4-0 win over Crystal Palace earlier in the season.
The Ivory Coast international attempted the third-most passes for Spurs at a success rate of 84%, and he was rewarded with an assist for Lamela’s goal.
However, it was defensively where you could see much improvement had been undertaken from the right-back. Aurier attempted the most tackles (6) and won the joint-second most aerial duels for the north London giants as they kept their first clean sheet since the 4-0 win over Palace.
Sky Sports agreed with the assessment of Aurier as they gave him a seven out of 10, commenting on his attacking performance.
They said: “Got down the right-hand side well and ended up with a hand in two goals, helping to make Heung-Min Son’s first and being provider for Erik Lamela’s goal after half-time too. Rarely troubled defensively by Rajiv van la Parra.” (Source: Sky Sports)
