Upamecano could develop into one of the very best if he joined Pochettino’s Tottenham

Tottenham maintained their excellent start to the Premier League season with a 3-1 win over Fulham at Wembley.

Goals from Harry Kane, Lucas Moura and Kieran Trippier handed Mauricio Pochettino his second win of the season. Their biggest test of the new campaign will be at the weekend as they travel to Old Trafford to face Manchester United. The Lilywhites will be confident of securing all three points after the Red Devils were beaten by Brighton.

It marks the first time that Toby Alderweireld will come face to face with the club that pursued him all summer. Jose Mourinho was desperate to bolster his defence and identified the Belgian as the perfect signing. However, the clubs were unable to reach an agreement despite reports suggesting the 29-year-old was eager to link up with the Portuguese.

Should Alderweireld leave at any point in the near future, Pochettino should target RB Leipzig defender, Dayot Upamecano, as his replacement. Valued at £27m by Transfermarkt, the 19-year-old has emerged as one of the top prospects in world football after leaving Red Bull Salzburg in January 2017. The Frenchman made 28 appearances in the Bundesliga last year, helping Leipzig secure a sixth-place finish. Upamecano should follow Naby Keita in making the move to the Premier League.

He embodies a modern-day centre back – pacey, great on the ball and a commanding presence in the back four. Upamecano would slot seamlessly into the back four alongside Jan Vertonghen and Davidson Sanchez and working with Pochettino would do wonders for his development. The youngster averaged two tackles and two interceptions per game last season – no Tottenham centre-back averaged more (WhoScored).

Tottenham fans would quickly forget about Alderweireld if they secured Upamecano’s services.
