Tottenham supporters in the Transfer Tavern are relishing the remainder of the summer transfer window following the news that manager Mauricio Pochettino has signed a new long-term deal with the club.
The 46-year-old took charge of the North Londoners back in 2014 after a short but impressive stint at Southampton, and he has since transformed Spurs into one of the best sides in the country following three successive top four finishes in the Premier League. And while the Argentine has yet to deliver a trophy during his four-year spell as Tottenham boss, several of our resident Spurs supporters are convinced that he is the man to bring some silverware to the club in the near future.
Thus, there are many excited and expectant Tottenham fans in the Tavern at present, several of whom are likely to be intrigued and satisfied with the recent news that goalkeeper Michel Vorm has penned a new one-year deal to remain in North London.
And with a deal for Vorm done, Pochettino’s side must now turn their attentions towards securing an agreement with £16.2 million-rated star Mousa Dembele (as per Transfermarkt) regarding his future at the club.
Ultimately, the 30-year-old has been repeatedly linked with a move away this summer given he has just one year left on his current Spurs deal, with the likes of Inter Milan reportedly keen on securing the Belgium international during the close season.
However, Spurs simply have to do all they can to retain the services of the former Fulham ace, as he is undoubtedly one of the best midfielders in the Premier League, and as such his departure would leave a gaping hole in Pochettino’s midfield department.
Quite simply, the 30-year-old has everything required to be a hugely successful Premier League midfielder, be it incredible ability on the ball in showing composure under pressure, making driving runs, and launching attacks, as well as ability off it in breaking up play and making several key tackles and interceptions.
And when he is at his very best, Dembele is able to glide across the pitch and control and dominate the middle of the park for Spurs, and this was none-more-so evident than Tottenham’s 2-2 draw with Juventus back in February, in which the Belgian ace ran the show.
And a performance like that on a big stage like that is exactly why Pochettino and the club’s hierarchy have to pen him down to a new deal, as although he has had injury problems and will be 31 next month, he still brings an enormous amount of quality to the Spurs midfield, quality that won’t be easy to replace.
And with a new contract for Vorm sorted, chairman Daniel Levy and the Tottenham hierarchy must now turn their attentions to securing an agreement with Dembele over his future in North London.
