“When do we have to take the Superman cape off?” – Arsenal fans merciless after shock Spurs defeat

Spurs fans in the Transfer Tavern are keeping their heads down, quietly sipping on ale in the hope they’ll escape ridicule for last night’s performance in the Europa League.

The Lilywhites made an absolute mess of the first leg against Gent, who are currently seventh in the Belgian top flight, losing 1-0 at the Ghelamco Arena.

They had the chance to make amends in the ultimate leg last night but Harry Kane’s own goal in the 20th minute meant that Spurs would need at least two to progress to the next round.

That was by no means beyond Tottenham’s reach in a game against such modest opposition but Dele Alli’s sending off for a horror tackle on Brecht Dejaegere left them chasing a two-goal winning margin with just ten men.

And Spurs’ hopes of defying those odds were wiped out completely when the hero of the first leg, Jeremy Perbet, came on from the bench to net Gent’s second of the evening.

It was another disappointing performance from Spurs in Europe, having crashed out of their Champions League group after suffering two defeats at Wembley, and in a cup competition, having been eliminated from the EFL Cup this term and also struggled against Wycombe Wanderers in the FA Cup.

And Arsenal fans on Twitter have been quick to point the finger at White Hart Lane gaffer Mauricio Pochettino, claiming the Argentine is worryingly overrated.
