Tottenham defender, Toby Alderweireld, still faces an uncertain future at the club.

The Belgium international has blossomed into one of the finest defenders in world football after joining from Atletico Madrid. Alderweireld struck up a formidable partnership with his countryman Jan Vertonghen and became an integral part of Mauricio Pochettino’s system at White Hart Lane. However, speculation was rife that the 29-year-old would leave the club in the summer.

Manchester United were huge admirers of the Belgian, but the move failed to materialise with the two clubs way apart on a valuation. Alderweireld can leave the club on the cheap next summer, and no new deal seems to be on the horizon. There is surely a fear that United could always rekindle their interest in January meaning Tottenham will have to replace the talismanic defender.

One man they should be keeping track of is RB Leipzig captain – Willi Orban. Valued at £13.5m by Transfermarkt, Orban caused an uproar when he joined Leipzig back in 2015 from rivals Kaiserslautern and was instrumental during their successful promotion bid to the Bundesliga. The defender has remained a key player for the German side and was handed the captaincy in October last year.

The 25-year-old has made an impressive start to the new season, helping Leipzig reach fifth in the Bundesliga table. The German is a fantastic tackler who loves to get stuck in – Orban has averaged 2.3 tackles per game so far this season. As well as being strong on the ground, he is a massive threat in the air, winning an incredible 5.2 aerial duels per game in the Bundesliga (WhoScored).

Should Alderweireld depart, Orban would prove to be an excellent replacement.
