Tottenham supporters have been pretty upbeat in the Transfer Tavern in the last few days after seeing their team beat Watford 2-0 in the Premier League on Monday night to move a step closer to Champions League qualification.
Mauricio Pochettino’s men went into their encounter with the Hertfordshire-based outfit having seen fifth place Chelsea beat Swansea City to move within two points of Spurs in the table, thus piling the pressure on the North London club to respond. And they did just that as goals from Dele Alli and Harry Kane sealed a routine victory for Pochettino’s side at Wembley, thus restoring their five-point cushion over the Blues with just three games to play.
As such, there have been many happy Tottenham fans in the Tavern in recent times, several of whom are hoping their club can indeed get the job done between now and the end of the season in securing a third consecutive top four spot.
In the meantime though, there has been much for our resident Spurs supporters to get their teeth into, not least recent reports suggesting that midfielder Christian Eriksen could be on his way to Paris Saint-Germain this summer.
And were the Denmark international to indeed make the move to the French capital, the North Londoners simply have to replace him with Real Madrid’s £67.5 million-rated ace Isco (as per Transfermarkt).
Ultimately, the vast majority of what good Tottenham produce comes through Eriksen, with the 26-year-old enjoying one of his best seasons at the club to date with 14 goals and 13 assists in all competitions this time round.
Significantly though, there aren’t many better playmakers in the division than the former Ajax star, with Eriksen possessing the ability to conjure something up out of nothing, while also pick a pass many others simply wouldn’t see.
Take that out of this Tottenham team, and it remains to be seen how prolific the likes of Alli and Kane might be in front of goal, and that is exactly why they have to try and lure Isco to the club as Eriksen’s replacement.
Like Eriksen, the Spain international has the remarkable ability of being able to create chances out of very little while also find space and time in the tightest of areas – he’s a world-class playmaker with world-class ability in the final third.
And if Spurs are serious about challenging for major honours in the coming years, not only can they ill-afford to sell their best players, but if they do, they simply have to replace them with players of equal or even higher standard. And Isco is one of those.
Pochettino’s side have been linked with the 26-year-old in the last 12 months or so such were his struggles for regular football at Real Madrid, and while he has featured more regularly since then for Zinedine Zidane’s side, there is likely to be a big overhaul at the Bernabeu this summer after their underwhelming La Liga campaign.
Thus, were Tottenham to indeed sell Eriksen to PSG, they simply must seek to replace him with the supremely gifted Isco this summer.
