Tottenham supporters in the Transfer Tavern are relishing the new Premier League season following the news that manager Mauricio Pochettino has signed a new long-term deal to remain at the club.
The Argentine took over at the North London outfit back in 2014 after impressing during a short stint in charge of Southampton, and he has since taken Spurs to three successive top four finishes in the Premier League to underline their status as one of the best teams in the division. And while the 46-year-old has yet to deliver a trophy in charge of the club, many of our resident Tottenham fans are convinced that he will be the man to end their long wait for some silverware in the coming years.
Subsequently, there are many optimistic and expectant Spurs supporters in the Tavern at present, although they are unlikely to be overly thrilled by recent reports suggesting that their team will end their interest in Crystal Palace’s Wilfried Zaha.
And with a deal for the Ivorian seemingly off, the North London outfit must now turn their attentions towards £9 million-rated ace Kenedy (as per Transfermarkt), who would surely be an upgrade on current Spurs winger Erik Lamela.
Ultimately, Argentina international Lamela has struggled to re-discover his form for Tottenham upon return from injury, what with the 26-year-old spending the best part of a year out with a hip problem, and only returning to fitness back in November 2017.
And while Pochettino has certainly been managing his game time in a bid to get back to up to full speed, the winger only managed two Premier League goals in 25 appearances this season, and both of those came in their 5-4 victory over Leicester City on the final day.
And with Spurs seemingly eyeing the next level next term under Pochettino, they simply need greater depth in the squad and the need for those attacking players out of the side to deputise as strongly as those in it – Kenedy could be that man.
Clearly, the Brazilian had a big influence on Newcastle United in the second half of the campaign following his loan move there from Chelsea, with the 22-year-old netting twice and laying on two assists in 13 Premier League games for Rafa Benitez’s side.
And while those are hardly ground-breaking figures, Spurs are sure to be interested in how Kenedy galvanised a Magpies frontline that were goal-shy in the first half of the campaign and eventually turned them into a side that finished tenth in the Premier League – he could have a similar effect when on the pitch for Tottenham.
Like Zaha, the 22-year-old was one of the most influential attackers outside of the Premier League’s top six this season, and with the Chelsea star likely to command less than the £70 million price-tag on Zaha’s shoulders, it’s a move Spurs should be seriously interested in.
And given the Brazilian ace is likely to be an upgrade on 26-year-old Lamela, it’s a move they must seek to make this summer to deepen the squad and enhance their major trophy credentials next season.
