Tottenham’s 43-cap transfer target proves Levy won’t change to keep Pochettino in charge

The Tottenham Hotspur fans in the Transfer Tavern are hoping their club will complete a handful of sensational deals this summer in order to make a statement of intent ahead of their move into the new stadium, but recent reports suggest Daniel Levy has other ideas.

Tottenham’s chairman has long been famed for his pragmatism and his ability to drive the best possible deal for the club, and he has earned plenty of plaudits in the process. However, the club are rapidly approaching a watershed moment in their development which will determine whether Tottenham want to become a club who take financial risks in order to compete for silverware, or one who which is content to compete for a 4th place finish and balance the books.

Naturally, the supporters are hoping the former option is the one which the club will take, but history has taught us that Levy is unlikely to alter his approach any time soon. And that notion has been further consolidated by recent reports from ESPN which claim that Tottenham have joined West Ham United and Leicester City in the race to secure the services of Ahmed Hegazi this summer.

With Toby Alderweireld widely reported to be seeking a move away from the club, the reports regarding Hegazi are a legitimate cause for concern for the supporters.

West Brom’s relegation would certainly give Tottenham the opportunity of completing a cut-price deal for Hegazi, but considering the 43-cap Egypt international was an ever-present in a side who ultimately weren’t good enough for the Premier League, their interest is certainly surprising.

Mauricio Pochettino has openly and not so cryptically called upon the club to take more risks in recent weeks, but Tottenham’s reported interest in Hegazi proves that Levy will continue to run the club with a business brain, rather than an ambitious footballing brain.

Whether that attitude will eventually result in Pochettino’s departure or not remains to be seen, but with frictions seemingly on the rise in North London, Levy might be wise to reconsider his approach before targeting players of Hegazi’s calibre this summer.
