The Tottenham Hotspur fans in the Transfer Tavern are expecting great things from one of their emerging talents, namely Harry Winks, but recent reports suggest his progress could be hampered by the departure of Mousa Dembele this summer.
Harry Winks started the season in excellent form and his reputation soared following his mature display at the centre of Tottenham’s midfield at the Bernabeu back in September. Winks’ composure in pressurised situations and tenacious attitude earned him plenty of plaudits from fans and pundits alike, but his career has rather stagnated since his eye-catching display against the current Champions League holders.
The 22-year-old midfielder was in and out of the team during the first-half of the season but he has since struggled for first-team opportunities due to competition for places and injury problems. However, his first-team opportunities could be set to increase next season, as recent reports from the Daily Mail claim that Tottenham are set to sell both Victor Wanyama and Mousa Dembele (valued at £16.2 million by Transfermarkt) during the summer transfer window.
At first glance, the departure of Dembele would appear to be good news for Winks who is on the cusp of breaking into Tottenham’s first-team, but there is reason to suggest that the departure of the Belgium international would actually be detrimental to his development. Although first-team opportunities are naturally beneficial for any young player trying to make their mark on the Premier League, the presence of experienced players from which to learn from can be equally as valuable.
Training alongside a player of Dembele’s quality is a blessing for an upcoming star like Winks, especially considering there are similarities to be drawn between the two players. Like Winks, Dembele is outrageously comfortable when receiving the ball in tight situations, and he is arguably the most composed and effective central-midfielder in the Premier League at navigating his way out of trouble.
Winks could learn so much from training and playing alongside Dembele, so his departure would certainly represent a huge blow for Tottenham’s academy product.
