The Tottenham Hotspur fans in the Transfer Tavern have been encouraged by their side’s development of youth in recent years, but they are concerned that some of their top talents could be poached by rival clubs before they have fully developed.
Tottenham’s U18 side humbled a hapless Arsenal by 9 goals to nil on Tuesday as Reo Griffiths played a starring role in the humiliation at Hotspur Way. The 17-year-old attacker who is one of the brightest talents emerging from Tottenham’s academy ranks scored 4 goals and provided 3 assists for his teammates on an excellent day for the club.
Griffiths -who predominantly operates at centre-forward but can also operate in a wide-role – finished the U18 season with 27 goals to show for his efforts from 20 appearances – a record which is bound to raise eyebrows not just within the club but also across Europe. According to The Sun, the quality of his performances have provoked interest from RB Leipzig, and that report has understandably been met with concern by the resident Lilywhites propping up our bar.
The fact that Griffiths is out of contract with Spurs at the end of the season is particularly concerning the supporters who have been waiting expectantly for their club to announce an extension on his current deal. Indeed, Griffiths’ record this season suggests Spurs have a genuine wonderkid on their hands who could light up the Premier League in the years to come, and maybe even as soon as next season.
Tottenham have struggled to find any success with either Vincent Janssen or Fernando Llorente in their efforts to support Harry Kane, but Griffiths could potentially be ready to make the step up to the first-team if he stays fit during the summer and trains with the senior squad throughout pre-season.
Regardless of whether Griffiths is ready for the step up in class at this moment in time, Spurs would be foolish to sell him to RB Leipzig this summer considering his immense level of potential, so they should do everything in their power to extend his current deal when the season reaches its conclusion.
