Tottenham supporters have been reasonably downbeat in the Transfer Tavern in recent weeks such has been their team’s poor domestic form, but they did get back to winning ways on Wednesday night by easing past Apoel Nicosia in the Champions League.
Mauricio Pochettino’s men have won just one of their six league games since thumping Liverpool 4-1 at Wembley on October 22, a run of form which has seen them plummet to sixth place in the table, and a staggering 18 points adrift of leaders Manchester City. However, there was some respite for Spurs fans earlier this week as their side comfortably saw off Apoel Nicosia in their final Champions League group match, with goals from Fernando Llorente, Son Heung-min, and Georges-Kevin N’Koudou sealing a routine victory for Pochettino’s side, who advance to the last 16 having picked up more points (16) than any other side in the group stages of the competition.
Nonetheless, there are a few concerned Spurs fans in the Tavern given their recent domestic struggles, and their mood is unlikely to have improved by a recent report from Marca, which outlines some potentially damaging news in Tottenham’s reported pursuit of midfielder Geoffrey Kondogbia.
The 24-year-old is currently on loan at La Liga outfit Valencia and has been since August from Italian giants Inter Milan, and he has gone on to make 12 league appearances for the club since then, netting three goals and laying on one assist in the process.
And with his contract up at the San Siro at the end of the season, the France international’s future has been subject to speculation in recent times, with Tottenham one side reportedly keen on sealing a deal for the industrious midfielder.
However, recent reports suggest that Kondogbia would prefer to remain at Valencia beyond his current loan spell, and with an option to make the loan permanent at its conclusion, the Spanish side are certainly in pole position to land the Frenchman.
And this is sure to strike a further blow into Pochettino’s transfer plans, as the tough times look set to continue for Spurs.
Landlord’s verdict: It’s been a testing few weeks for Tottenham and manager Mauricio Pochettino, who has overseen just one win in six Premier League games in what has been a tough time for the North London outfit.
And things don’t look like getting much better on the transfer front either as reports suggest that target Geoffrey Kondogbia is happy at current club Valencia, with it his ‘preference’ to remain there beyond his current loan spell.
And with Spurs somewhat struggling in the central midfielder department this term, given the injuries to Mousa Dembele and Victor Wanyama, this was surely a deal Pochettino would have been hoping to strike, but now it looks like it will take something very special to lure Kondogbia away from the Mestalla.
