Transfer Battle: Ederson vs Joe Hart

It’s safe to say that when comparing Burnley and Man City, their recent fortunes could not be any more different. While City have been given newfound riches, Burnley have to contend with a fairly shoestring budget in comparison.

There is one link between the two clubs, and it’s the now Burnley goalkeeper Joe Hart. The former England number one joined Burnley over the summer on a permanent deal following two torrid seasons on loan.

To replace him, Man City paid a then record fee for Benfica goalkeeper, Ederson. So with the two so heavily linked, let’s compare them.

It was a quick rise from second-choice goalkeeper at Benfica, to first-choice, to then being then becoming, at the time of his arrival, the most expensive goalkeeper in the world.

Despite having the huge fee on his shoulders, the Brazilian has never seemed fazed and instantly became one of the best players at the club.

In Pep’s system, a lot of emphasis is placed on the goalkeeper’s ability to play out from the back, and in Ederson they may just have the best ballplaying goalkeeper in the league. With him at the base, City instantly transformed into the side that Pep has been wanting and there’s no doubt that he contributed heavily to the club winning the title.

At 25, there’s still so much to come from Ederson and City could have a potential legend on their hands.

Joe Hart

Signed for just £4 million over the summer, Joe Hart instantly filled a hole that needed addressing. Sean Dyche had both Nick Pope and Tom Heaton out with injury at the beginning of the season and needed a goalkeeper with experience to come and perform. So far this season, Joe Hart has done exactly that.

The now Burnley man has enjoyed a slight career resurgence and has so far played eight games in the league. Although Burnley struggled at the beginning of the season, Dyche’s side have started to pick up form and such has been Hart’s form, that it remains unclear Heaton or Pope will recover their places.

At the moment, it looks as though Burnley have conducted some good business.

TT Verdict

Despite Hart’s return to some semblance of form, this wasn’t exactly the toughest battle to call. Since his arrival, Ederson has improved City massively and has allowed Pep to fully institute his style of play.

The Brazilian’s ability with the ball is outstanding and in him, City have one of the best ‘keepers in Europe and one that could be a future legend at the club.
