Transfer Battle: Jamie Vardy vs Kelechi Iheanacho

Leicester City have long been known for their excellent scouting and they’ve probably pulled off some of the greatest transfer deals in recent history.

Signed from non-League Fleetwood Town in 2012, Jamie Vardy’s rise to Premier League champion will go down as one of the best stories in Premier League history.

Following the striker trend, Kelechi Iheanacho was brought in to partner Vardy and eventually take over from the former Fleetwood Town man last year. With two talented strikers at the club, let’s compare the two forwards…

Kelechi Iheanacho

Signed for a £25 million fee last year after scoring 21 goals in 64 games after making his debut for Man City. The Nigerian was never really going to get a chance at the City despite his potential and on the face of it, it looked as though Leicester had made a good deal.

At the beginning of his Leicester career, Iheanacho struggled to make an impact on the side as he made nine appearances, mostly off the bench but open his account for the club. Following the nine appearances, Iheanacho was benched for the next few months and didn’t make an appearance in the league until the end of January. He had a much better second-half of the season as he scored three goals and registered three assists.

He’s had an ok start to the season this year as he scored one goal and grabbed three assists. However, following his fairly large transfer fee, he hasn’t quite lived up to the hype and as it stands, it’s unsure if Iheanacho is going to be a long-term striker for The Foxes.

Jamie Vardy

Arguably one of the best Premier League transfers of all-time, signing Vardy for just £1 million in 2012 is an absolute steal.

Coming off a season with Fleetwood Town where he scored 31 goals to earn the club promotion, it took the Englishman a bit of time to kickstart his Leicester City career but in the club’s promotion campaign, Vardy scored 16 goals and grabbed 10 assists.

He was an important player in Leicester’s survival but the season after the blisteringly quick forward, scored 24 goals as Leicester pulled off a miracle season to win the Premier League. Vardy was also voted as the ‘Premier League Player of the Season’.

Since then, he’s established himself as one of the better strikers in the league and has more than completely paid off the minuscule transfer fee that Leicester paid for him.

TT Grade: A+

 The Verdict

While Iheanacho may turn out to be a good player, considering Vardy’s impact, transfer fee and level of performance at Leicester, he easily wins this one.

His electric pace and superb finishing has shown that there’s talent in the lower leagues but also highlighted some excellent recruitment by Leicester. Arguably one of the greatest players in the club’s history, Vardy was a fantastic addition to the club.
