Transfer Battle: Kenedy vs Mohamed Elyounoussi

Newcastle United will be looking to claim their first three points of the Premier League season when they travel to St. Mary’s on Saturday to face Southampton.

Rafael Benitez’s men are rock bottom in the table having failed to pick up a single win all campaign, but will see their clash against the Saints as a great chance to finally get the ball rolling.

Southampton have also had their own troubles with Mark Hughes’ side yet to claim victory at home, which will give Newcastle encouragement heading into the game.

And one player who has the potential to be a match-winner for the Magpies is Kenedy, who is probably the club’s biggest attacking threat. Meanwhile, for Southampton, Mohamed Elyounoussi is a player who will be desperate to impress on the day.

With that in mind, how do the two wingers compare?

Considering the impact he had at St. James’ Park last season, it is fair to say Kenedy has not exactly lived up to the hype following his return to Tyneside.

Nevertheless, with all the technical skill the Brazilian possesses, it has to be only a matter of time before he starts to deliver the goods again.

In 1v1 situations, Kenedy may just be one of the best wingers in the Premier League. The Chelsea loanee gets past opposition defenders so easily with his pace, dribbling and the odd flip flap.

Kenedy’s decision making, however, is an area of his game that could do with some improvement with the Fluminense youth product often taking a shot when a team-mate is in a better position.

But overall, he has been a terrific capture for Newcastle.

Mohamed Elyounoussi

Given his performances for Basel in the Champions League last season, much was expected of Elyounoussi when he arrived at St. Mary’s over the summer.

The 24-year-old, simply put, however, has been a disappointment. Hughes’ experiments with different formations has not helped Elyounoussi but, in the game time given thus far, he has not done enough.

Elyounoussi has yet to score or create a Premier League goal, something which needs to change if Southampton are to start picking up wins.

The Saints cannot afford to solely rely on Danny Ings for goals and, therefore, need other attacking players such as Elyounoussi to raise their game.

TT Grade: D

TT Verdict:

By no means has Kenedy set the Premier League alight this season. In the coming weeks, Newcastle supporters will be demanding much more from him and the rest of the team.

But compared to Elyounoussi, Kenedy’s impact has been massive while out the two, he quite clearly has the higher ceiling.

Therefore, the Newcastle man is the victor in this battle between wingers.
