Transfer Battle: Mohamed Elyounoussi vs Adama Traore

Both Wolves and Southampton had very busy summers as the clubs reinvested into their squads in order to try and remain in the Premier League come the end of this season.

Coincidentally both club signed wingers over the summer as Southampton signed Basel winger, Mohamed Elyounoussi while Wolves signed Middlesbrough speedster Adama Traore.

Both players are great talents, so with that in mind let’s compare the two…

Mohamed Elyounoussi

Bought for £16 million over the summer, Elyounoussi was one of the four new recruits to join the Saints over the summer following two brilliant seasons with side Swiss giants, FC Basel.

During his time at Basel, Elyounoussi established himself as one of the best players in the league and registered double digits in goals and assists in both of his seasons. Since joining the club, however, the Norwegian is yet to open his account for the south coast club. Considering the step in quality between the Swiss league and Premier League, it’s only understandable that it may take some time for him to settle in.

A versatile player, Elyounoussi is capable of playing in most forward positions but has so far been primarily used as a right winger by Mark Hughes. He’ll need time to adapt but if the Norwegian can replicate the form he showed in Switzerland in England, Southampton could have a superb player on their hands.

Adam Traore

Possibly the quickest player in the league, Wolves made a late move for Middlesbrough’s speedster. The Midlands club activated the winger’s £18 million release clause to bolster the club’s forward line.

So far this season, Traore has only managed five appearances as a sub in the league but could be a useful player to have as the season goes on. During his final year with Middlesbrough he managed to score five goals to go along with 10 assists but aside from that, his career in England can be summed up as being quite inconsistent.

Everyone in the league knows how quick he is and in one on one situations he can be lethal. It’s his ability to deliver an end product in the final third that lets him down and if Wolves are to stay up this season, he will need to improve on that. The talent is there but if he can show it on a consistent basis in the Premier League is another thing.

TT Verdict

On the face of it, it’s easy to see why both clubs bought them. Southampton needed someone to help increase the amount of goals they score and in Elyounoussi they may have found a player that could produce more than Dusan Tadic. It will take time for him to bed into the league but he definitely has the talent to be one of the diamonds in the rough that Southampton seem to uncover.

While Elyounoussi is more of a subtle and creative player, Traore’s game is all about pace, power and beating defenders. Last year he did do that for Middlesbrough but it remains to be seen if he can ever develop his end product while playing in the Premier League. So for this battle, the Southampton man just shades this one.
