Transfer battle: Mohamed Elyounoussi vs Roberto Pereyra

Southampton and Watford are two teams with a lot of talented players, none more so than Mohamed Elyounoussi and Roberto Pereyra at each club.

While the players are at different stages in their careers at their clubs, they both can be huge figures for the future.

With that in mind, let’s compare these two transfers…

Mohamed Elyounoussi

Norway international Elyounoussi joined Southampton from Basel in the summer for £16m. The 24-year-old arrived with a lot of promise, having been one of the stars of the Swiss side over the past two seasons.

Unfortunately, his career at St Mary’s hasn’t taken off so far. However, the entire Southampton team have struggled so far this season, so it is unfair to blame one player. The Saints are dangerously close to being dragged into a relegation battle already at this point in the season, and could face a dreaded drop to the Championship. They will hope the winger finds his feet in England in order to avoid this fate.

Clearly, Elyounoussi’s career hasn’t been particularly glamorous in England so far, but that doesn’t stop this being a decent signing for the future should The Saints remain in the Premier League.

Roberto Pereyra

Watford signed Pereyra from Juventus in August 2016 for £10.4m in what was seen as a promising swoop. The midfielder had featured over 50 times for the Italian giants in the 2014/15 season, but struggled for game time the following season, and therefore needed a move away.

His first two seasons in England were quite slow, as he showed glimpses of the player he can be, but unfortunately not enough. However, the Argentinian looks reborn this season, as he has made a blistering start to the season for The Hornets, already scoring five goals in 11 games.

It took a while for the player to prove his worth at the club, but there is no doubt that he is showing what a fantastic signing he was for Watford.

TT Verdict:

While it is established that Elyounoussi is only starting his career in the Premier League, he has struggled so far. Then again, so did Pereyra when he first joined the league.

However, the Argentinian has raised his game considerably, and has taken it to a level that the Norwegian may not be able to replicate. With the additional fact that he was cheaper than Elyounoussi, that is why Pereyra wins this transfer battle.
