Transfer Battle: Roberto Firmino vs Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang

Liverpool splashed the cash over the summer to give Klopp one of the best team’s in world football and it’s been so far so good for The Reds. Arsenal, on the other hand, didn’t spend heavily over the summer but have been a surprise package in the league.

Central to Arsenal’s resurgence has been the form of £56 million man, Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang and with him in the side, the Gunners have one of the best strikers in the league.

Following the attacking trend, Liverpool have one of the best attacking trios in the league and while Sadio Mane and Mohamed Salah have stolen the limelight, Roberto Firmino’s work goes completely underrated and is arguably the club’s most essential player.

Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang

Amid a time where Arsenal were severely under pressure due to the contract situations of Mesut Ozil and Alexis Sanchez, the club had to bring in a big name.

While Ozil remained at the club, Arsenal sold Sanchez to Man U and in his wake, Arsenal had to replace his goals with a marquee signing. With that in mind, Arsenal made one of the most expensive signings ever to be made during January and brought in the Borussia Dortmund hotshot.

Since he’s arrived at the Emirates, Aubameyang’s form has been incredible and so far for Arsenal, he’s scored 17 goals in 23 games in the league. What makes that record even more impressive, is that for most of this season, the Gabon international has played on the wing.

It remains to be seen how long Aubameyang will be happy playing there but for now, he’s been superb, although at 29, Arsenal did pay a lot of money for him.

Robert Firmino

When Firmino arrived on Merseyside, he was a fairly non-descript arrival. He had a solid first season for Liverpool as the Brazilian scored 10 goals in 31 games in the league while also creating a further eight.

In his second season at the club, Firmino’s numbers improved but it was last season that that Firmino announced himself as one of the best strikers in Europe and one of the most underrated.

In the league, he scored 15 goals, while during Liverpool’s run to the Champions League Final, he netted 10 while also recording eight assists.

Some critics may point to the fact that he’s never broken the 20 goal barrier for Liverpool but with Sadio Mane and Mohamed Salah alongside him, he doesn’t need to.

His game is incredibly well-rounded and in terms of Liverpool’s pressing, Firmino is excellent. Having only paid £25 million for the Brazilian, Liverpool have pulled off an absolute steal.

The Verdict

Both Arsenal and Liverpool have two of the best forwards in the league. Aubameyang’s goalscoring streak of late has been incredible and in him, Arsenal have one of the best goalscorers in the league who also happens to be one of the quickest.

However, considering the fee that Liverpool paid and what Firmino offers to Jurgen Klopp’s side, the Brazilian wins this one. He’s incredibly underrated and has one of the most complete games in the league, if not in Europe.
