Transfer Battle: Romelu Lukaku vs Gabriel Jesus

Man United and Man City have not been afraid to splash the cash on players in recent seasons.

One the most high-profile signings United have made over the past few years has been Belgian Romelu Lukaku. On the other hand, Gabriel Jesus wasn’t necessarily Man City’s biggest signing, but is known by everyone now.

Both are strikers with big futures ahead of them in Manchester, so let’s compare these two transfers…

Romelu Lukaku

Man United signed Lukaku from Everton in July 2017 for a fee of £75m with £15m add-ons. The striker had scored 25 Premier League goals for The Toffees the season before, and was touted to be the Red Devils’ main goalscorer for many years to come.

The big striker’s first season at Old Trafford was one that started very well but slowly ground to a halt, managing 16 goals in total in the league. This season hasn’t been much better for him either. In his defence, at times, he has lacked the service from players around him to truly unleash his potential. Nonetheless, he is under-performing.

Away from the field the United supporters are seldom shy to lambaste Lukaku for his performances, but Mourinho has stood by him through dry spells and demonstrated a loyalty to the star-striker which is bound to help him in the long-run.

Despite the presence of both Anthony Martial and Marcus Rashford in the United squad, Mourinho has been reluctant to trust anybody other than the Belgian at the spearhead of his attack – a notion which suggests the United chief is a huge admirer of his talents, although plenty of supporters simply cannot understand the origins of that particular admiration.

Despite the player’s significant athletic prowess, he has been found guilty of lacking technique or tactical nous in critical moments. This is what stops him being compared with some the of world’s best strikers.

At such an extortionate price, fans can be forgiven for expecting more from the player.

Gabriel Jesus

Man City signed Jesus from Brazilian outfit Palmeiras in August 2016 for £27m plus add-ons. He was allowed to stay with his club until December before joining Man City, but once he arrived, he made an impression.

The 19-year-old arrived with a lot of promise, and he delivered immediately, scoring seven goals in 10 appearances during the 2016/17 season. He managed 13 goals last campaign, as he was a key figure in Man City’s demolition of the Premier League.

At such a young age- still only 21- he has the potential to be one of the world’s best, and under the tutelage of Pep Guardiola and Sergio Agüero, he has a very bright future at The Etihad indeed.

TT Verdict:

When comparing these two transfers, Jesus wins this battle in every aspect. Not only was the Brazilian significantly cheaper, but he is much younger than Lukaku as well. But most importantly, his performances have been as good, if not better than the Belgian’s.

While Lukaku’s stats look more impressive, as he has more goals, he has been the sole striker for United this whole time. On the other hand, Jesus has been an understudy to Agüero and still managed to accrue a decent number of goals.

Jesus comfortably wins this battle.
