Transfer Battle: Ryan Fraser vs Nathan Redmond

Southampton’s start to the season has been pretty poor while Bournemouth have surged up the table and are having one of their best starts since their promotion to the Premier League.

Central to Bournemouth’s strong start this season has been the play of the club’s diminutive winger, Ryan Fraser. He’s in the form of his life at the moment and he’s showing the level of play that Southampton fans will have hoped to see from Nathan Redmond this year.

With both players playing in the same position, let’s compare the two.

Ryan Fraser

Fraser arrived on the south coast in 2013 in a £400,000 deal from Aberdeen but it took some time for the small Scot to begin to fulfil his talent. He did help Bournemouth get promoted before spending a year on loan with Ipswich. On his return from his loan spell, the attacker played 28 games in the Premier League, scoring three goals to go along with eight assists.

He’s always shown flashes of his potential and this season, it looks as though we’re finally seeing him play to it. Capable of playing anywhere across the three attacking positions behind the striker, Fraser’s pace and ability to attack defenders in one on one situations has been a revelation so far this year.

For just £400,000, it looks as though Bournemouth have pulled off a masterstroke with this deal.

Nathan Redmond

Despite only being 24, it seems as though Redmond has been playing at the top level for years. After three seasons with Norwich, the winger was signed by Southampton in 2016 and had a fairly solid first year at the club under Claude Puel. He scored seven goals in 37 games for the club which was a solid return but last season, the 24-year-old had a fairly poor season, scoring just one solitary goal in 31 matches in the league.

This year, he’s continued that form and is yet to register a goal in eight matches at the club. He certainly has the talent to be a top-level attacker but at the moment, he’s severely underperforming at a time where Southampton needs him.

The Verdict

With Redmond in such been poor form, it wasn’t exactly the hardest battle to call. On current form, Fraser is one of the better players in the league on current form and although Redmond had a good season in his first year at the club, last season and so far this year, he’s been in woeful form.
