Here in the Football Transfer Tavern we have been disappointed with the rather slow start to this January transfer window.
However today’s copy of The Express have livened things up in the bar by suggesting that Chelsea are preparing to move for Real Madrid midfielder Xabi Alonso.
The 32-year-old’s contract at the Bernabeu expires in the summer and Real are ready to let him leave for a small fee now after he became surplus to requirements in Carlo Ancelotti’s side.
As one punter reminds us, the Spanish international was one of the only players to support Jose at the Bernebeu and that could see him returning to the Premier League after a six-year absence.
The possible move comes after the Blues were told that prime January target – Inter Milan’s Fredy Guarin – is not available for sale this month with the 27-year-old Colombian attacking midfielder still wanted at the San Siro.
Inter sporting director Piero Ausilio confirmed that talks had been held with Chelsea but added: “Guarin is an Inter player and we are happy to keep him.
“Denying the contacts with Chelsea would be denying the evidence. It is a source of pride to talk with them about one of our players, but everything stops there.
“We are happy Guarin could stay with us a long time. He’s an important player.”
And the reports today suggest that this could see Mourinho looking at his former player as he seeks a replacement for 35-year-old Frank Lampard in his ageing Chelsea squad.
The Blues may face some competition from Liverpool with Brendan Rodgers also thought to be keeping an eye on the ex-Reds man.
