Transfer Flashback: Lukas Podolski to Arsenal

Lukas Podolski is a player that a lot of Arsenal fans are still very fond of. The German attacker was signed in April 2012 ahead of the 2012/13 season and he spent three seasons with the club before being sold to Galatasaray in 2015. Podolski was an instant fan-favourite for his charisma off the pitch and his thunderbolt of a left-foot on it and he’s always welcome back at The Emirates.

When Podolski signed there was a genuine buzz around Arsenal. The German, who currently still plays football, turning out alongside Andreas Iniesta for Japanese side Vissel Kobe, was a serious talent back in his day and it’s no surprise that when Wenger confirmed signed him the fans were over the moon. In his international career, he racked up an incredible 130 appearances and scored 69 goals, putting him 3rd on Germany’s all-time list for both caps and goals, with The Gunners believing he could fire them to silverware.
However, with Podolski signed alongside the likes of Santi Cazorla and Olivier Giroud, who were also brought in that summer, Wenger assembled a team that was capable of battling it out for top four and for silverware. Unfortunately, Podolski failed to win any major trophies with the club, but he was still an important player at The Emirates and he bagged himself 16 goals and 12 assists in his first season at the club whilst being deployed both as a central striker and out on the left.
In his three years as a Gunner, ‘Poldi’ scored 31 times and set up a further 17 goals for teammates across his 82 appearances. He may not have been the most talented player to walk through the doors at The Emirates but he was certainly effective under Wenger, with his cannon of a left-foot proving become famous in England as he scored rockets for The Gunners. Now, as he approaches retirement, a lot of Arsenal fans wouldn’t be against seeing the German return to the club in some capacity.
