Crystal Palace supporters were in high spirits in the Transfer Tavern over the weekend after seeing their side come from two goals down to draw 2-2 with West Ham, while several of our resident Newcastle fans are eagerly anticipating their team’s trip to Burnley this evening.
Roy Hodgson’s Eagles went into their clash with the East London outfit firmly rooted to the bottom of the Premier League having won just one of their opening nine matches, and they looked on course for a ninth defeat when Javier Hernandez and Andre Ayew gave Slaven Bilic’s men a two-goal cushion at half-time. However, the home side responded emphatically with a Luka Milivojevic penalty and a 97th minute Wilfried Zaha strike securing a point for Palace, in turn moving them to within four points of safety, although they remain 20th in the table.
And several of our resident Magpies supporters are making the journey to Turf Moor this evening confident of recording a fifth league win of the campaign, although both Palace and Newcastle fans are likely to be frustrated by a recent report from Haberturk (via The Croydon Advertiser), which suggests that Everton have joined the race for Besiktas striker Cenk Tosun, a reported target of the aforementioned duo.
The 26-year-old made the move to the Turkish giants back in 2014 and has since gone from strength to strength with 58 goals in 131 games for the club, in which time he has helped them to back-to-back domestic title successes.
And with eight goals in 13 appearances so far this term, the latest of which coming in their 2-1 victory over Alanyaspor on Saturday, the Turkey international is refusing to let up, and it’s goal-scoring form which reportedly attracted the interest of both Palace and Newcastle over the summer.
In fact, the former reportedly failed with a late bid for the striker, and now it seems that they could be made to pay as reports suggest that David Unsworth’s Everton, who themselves are in dire need of a forward, have joined the race for Tosun’s signature.
And with Wolfsburg also thought to be interested, it very much remains to be seen where the 26-year-old is playing his trade come the conclusion of the January transfer window.
Landlord’s verdict: Cenk Tosun has been one of the most in-form strikers in Europe over the last 12 months, having bagged 20 goals for Besiktas in their run to the Turkish Super Lig title last season.
And with eight goals in 13 games this term, three of which coming in the Champions League, the 26-year-old continues to prove his goal-scoring credentials, so it’s unsurprising to see the likes of Crystal Palace and Newcastle United reportedly interested in his services.
But the Premier League duo now face a fight to land the forward given that another English side, namely Everton, are also thought to be in the race, and given that the Toffees spent over £100 million during the summer, they certainly have the financial power to lure Tosun to Goodison Park.
Thus, both Palace and Newcastle will have to act fast in the January window if they are beat each other and indeed the Toffees to the striking sensation.
