The Chelsea fans in the Transfer Tavern are feeling optimistic ahead of their favourable winter schedule.
Antonio Conte’s side have a real opportunity to embark on a run of successive Premier League victories in December, with not a single fixture pencilled in against one of the so-called top-six clubs during the most hectic month of the season. They remain comfortably adrift of league-leaders Manchester City, but the December schedule should give Chelsea plenty of reason to believe that their title-defence is far from over.
Indeed, The Blues faithful propping up the bar here believe it is only a matter of time before City slip-up, and provide their beloved club with a route back into the title race.
Throughout the season thus far, Conte has opted to utilise a tactical system containing 3 or 5 defenders at the back, whichever way you look at it, but that could be all set to change in January.
According to The Daily Express, Chelsea are facing a January bid from Real Madrid for their controversial central defender David Luiz.
The Brazillian has made the headlines recently due to a public feud with Antonio Conte that was set in motion by Conte’s decision to withdraw Luiz during their Champions League draw with Roma last month.
If the two are unable to put their differences to one side in the coming weeks, then Luiz’s departure will become inevitable.
Luiz’s sale to Real Madrid could force Conte to adopt a formation with only 4 defenders in his back-line as a result of a lack of strength in depth.
Chelsea currently have 4 recognised central defenders at the club, 5 if you include Azpilicueta, and a minor injury crisis could provide Conte with a selection headache later in the season.
If Conte is willing to part with Luiz in January, he will have to be pragmatic and adapt his tactical approach in favour of a flat back-four when he is short of defensive options.
