Arsenal fans are looking surprised here in the Football Transfer Tavern as Metro claim that the Gunners are close to signing Iker Casillas should the keeper manage to force Real Madrid into terminating his contract.
As one of our punters notes, Casillas will face life as a third choice keeper at the Bernabeu unless he makes a move and Arsenal are willing to make him an offer that he cannot turn down.
Los Blancos are expected to be bringing in Levante’s impressive Costa Rican goalkeeper Keylor Navas and Arsenal are still expected to sign Colombian number one David Ospina from Nice so Arsenal fans aren’t sure what to make of these latest reports.
The £100,000 per week that Arsenal are reportedly prepared to offer in wages is pretty good money by anyone’s standards, and 33-year-old Casillas could probably also look forward to a decent signing-on fee as well.
The deal that has been mooted is for five years and that would take the Spanish stopper until his 38th year, meaning he would be set for life.
Whilst that is a good deal for Casillas, the majority of our punters are not too keen on the deal. We think that if Arsene Wenger wanted to splash the cash in terms of wages, Sami Khedira would have been a better place to start.
Arsenal fans. Is this a disaster waiting to happen, offering so much money for a player who looks far past his best? Let us know your thoughts below.
