Metro certainly contain a story that is not impressive to the majority of Liverpool fans here in the Football Transfer Tavern as they claim one of the club’s top transfer targets has been told to snub them in favour of a move elsewhere this summer.
Shakhtar Donetsk star Henrikh Mkhitaryan has been told in no uncertain terms that a move to Liverpool would hamper his career and in order to really progress as a player, he needs to hold out for a better move according to the Armenian international’s manager.
His current coach, Mircea Lucescu, told him that: “It is his decision, his desire, but there is still time for him to change his mind, because I think he is making a big mistake.
“I can understand the urge to leave if he has a chance to go to a club that surpasses Shakhtar, like Barcelona or Real Madrid, but not many clubs are beyond our level – not clubs like Liverpool or Tottenham.
“We are a strong club with 50,000 passionate supporters every week, and every year we are fighting for the league, the cups and the Champions League.
“This place is good for him, and he is making a mistake if he thinks there are many teams above this level.”
Quite what Brendan Rodgers makes of these comments remains to be seen but after a busy summer having already landed Kolo Toure, Iago Aspas, Luis Alberto and Simon Mignolet, many Reds supporters were hoping to follow these captures up with the signing of Mkhitaryan from the Donbass Arena.
Should Mkhitaryan hold out for a move to a side in the Champions League? Would Liverpool nurture his talents well? Let us know your thoughts below.
