Despite still officially sitting top of the Premier League by two points, the majority of Transfer Tavern readers still believe Arsenal will be trophyless by the time the 2013/14 season has finished.
The Football Transfer Tavern posed the question to its punters over a month ago now and since the poll was posted, Arsenal have gone down 1-0 at Manchester United and also to a crushing 6-3 humiliation at Manchester City, cutting their lead to just two points from second-placed Liverpool.
With the majority of Gunners supporters in the tavern admitting that Arsene Wenger’s side have exceeded their expectations already this season, fans of the North London side are also gutted that they couldn’t see out the recent home fixture against Everton – seen as crucial in the title race as Gerard Deulofeu struck a late dramatic equaliser.
Add two tricky ties in the cup competitions to come with arch rivals Tottenham drawn against the Gunners in the FA Cup and Bayern Munich in the Champions League and Arsenal fans will be hoping their season doesn’t begin to slump.
With that oh so familiar sinking feeling beginning to set in with a fixture against Jose Mourinho’s Chelsea lurking just around the corner, it potentially seems as though the early season optimism could be trading itself for nail-biting nervousness amidst the Arsenal ranks.
It seems the majority of tavern’s punters have been thinking along these lines also with 58% of readers’ votes suggesting Arsenal will remain trophyless by the time the 2013/14 season ends.
However, a hearty 42% of readers’ votes believe that Arsene Wenger’s men can finally stop the rot and end a dire eight years without a trophy for a club undoubtedly residing in the upper echelons of the modern footballing fabric.
