Generally speaking, West Ham United have had a rather successful season, however, Manuel Pellegrini must build on it next year and turn the Hammers into a real force to be reckoned with in the Premier League.
With the campaign having come to an end, it is only natural for the transfer rumour mill to churn out a number of stories over the next few months and the Irons can only be expected to have their fair share, especially where midfielders are concerned.
And, for this particular Transfer Battle, there have been two rumours in recent days that have stood out for certain reasons and make perfect sense for us to dive in deep and compare the duo.
Up step Andreas Samaris and Mo Diame. It’s time to do battle!
Samaris was recently linked by Fotomac (via Sport Witness) with a move to West Ham this summer, although they also suggest a number of other Premier League sides are keen on the Benfica midfielder. The Greece international will become a free agent in the summer as his contract with the Primeira Liga outfit comes to an end and the Hammers would certainly be wise to consider making a move for the player.
The 29-year-old is a combative midfielder that is excellent in a central role in the middle of the park, or he can also provide Pellegrini’s side with a solid foundation a little deeper on the pitch. He is a physical individual that possess a great tackling ability, is tireless and his positional awareness is second-to-none.
It is not just his defensive capabilities that could make him an attractive option either, as Samaris is also equally adept at passing the ball forward and can get into advanced areas of the pitch at times and provide assistance to the attacking line.
A dead-ball specialist, the Greek midfielder is vastly experienced and could bring a winning mentality to the London Stadium outfit as well, which is something West Ham could certainly make the most of if they are to go further next season.

Another Turkish media publication has decided to link West Ham with a different experienced soon-to-be free agent this summer, with Sabah claiming the Hammers have offered Diame a deal to make a return to the club after a five-year absence.
And, although absence helps the heart grow fonder – or so they say – it is highly unlikely that this will be the case regarding the former Senegal international. Back in 2014, he made himself an unpopular figure with the club’s faithful after forcing a move away to Hull City claiming he wanted to play for a club higher up in the Premier League table and stated he should have left the Irons long before he did (Daily Star).
But, off-the-field politics aside, would Diame improve West Ham if he were to return? It would be hard to say that he would. The Hammers already have a number of players who can play in the position that he does and do it rather well, if not better than the Newcastle United man.
Bringing the 31-year-old to the London Stadium would have to feel like a rather underwhelming addition and one that would question the ambition of those involved at the club, as they could surely look at signing better quality players instead of someone they have tried and tested once before.

Samaris has to be the clear winner of this Transfer Battle as he would offer more to West Ham than Diame ever could. The midfielder can play a number of roles in the middle of the park and has proven he has the ability to win titles.
The links surrounding a return for the Newcastle midfielder do not make any sense at all – especially considering the acrimonious way he left the club initially.
What is it they say? The saying ‘never go back to an ex’ seems to be ringing a bell…
