TT Battle: Daniel James vs Nathan Redmond

With Danny Ings struggling to stay fit and the club’s other forwards not firing, it is likely that Southampton move for a new No.9 in the summer.

But as well as that, the Saints could also look to sign another wide player with the Daily Mail reporting that the south coast club are just one outfit interested in Swansea City’s Daniel James.

Following the departure of Dusan Tadic and with his replacement Mohamed Elyounoussi failing to make much of an impact, it is another area where Southampton have been lacking this season.

Considering that, signing James, who could now come in to complement Nathan Redmond on the opposite flank, would be a logical step to take.

Daniel James

Said to be on course for a “bright future” by ex-Wales striker John Hartson (talkSPORT), James has been in great form this campaign, putting in some solid displays in the FA Cup in particular.

The 21-year-old caused absolute havoc in the quarter-finals against Pep Guardiola’s Manchester City, while his full skill set was on show for his goal versus Brentford in the fifth round.

On the break, James breezed past everyone in sight with his terrifying pace before slotting past Luke Daniels.

For Ralph Hasenhuttl, a manager who puts a lot of stock in counter-attacking, the Wales international could be the perfect addition to his side.

The Austrian could possibly face competition from Leeds United with the Yorkshire club having targeted James in the previous transfer window (Telegraph). Based on this campaign, though, entering a potential bidding war looks well worth it.

Nathan Redmond

Again, on the other side to James, Southampton supporters are likely to see Redmond.

After a difficult 2017/18 Premier League season, Redmond has made some very positive strides this term, especially under Hasenhuttl.

Quick and direct with his dribbling, the 25-year-old is one of many players at Southampton that the former RB Leipzig manager is starting to get the best out of.

He needs to start adding a lot more goals to his game, but Redmond will be pleased with how things are going of late – especially compared to the previous campaign.

TT Verdict:

When you look at James and Redmond, you think pace, pace and pace.

The Swansea man, who has probably been the more consistent player out of the two, is exactly the sort of winger Hasenhuttl should be looking at.

Be it to complement Redmond or provide competition for the Southampton ace, the Saints could really do with someone of his profile right now.
