TT Battle: Danny Rose vs Ryan Bertrand

Tottenham will be looking to bounce back from their disappointing north London derby collapse to Arsenal when they take on Southampton in the Premier League at Wembley tonight.

Meanwhile, the Saints will be hoping their post-Hughes era can get off to a great start, though the chances of that look very slim with both Danny Ings and Ryan Bertrand likely to miss out through injury.

Even with the two Englishmen expected to be sidelined, though, tonight’s game could still be one of great interest to Gareth Southgate with Tottenham having a host of England internationals including Danny Rose.

Like Bertrand, Rose is just one of many good left-backs Southgate can call upon when it comes to selecting his Three Lions squad. So with that in mind, how do the two compare?

Danny Rose

Due to injuries and questioning Tottenham’s ambitions as a club, Rose has since lost his place in the starting XI to Ben Davies.

Prior to that, though, Rose was arguably the best left-back in the Premier League. Defensively, the 28-year-old was unrivalled in his position.

His tackling was so strong and he rarely let an opposition winger get past him, constantly getting touch-tight before nicking the ball off of them.

Going forward, Rose was not as influential as some of the more attacking full-backs in the division such as Marcos Alonso, Benjamin Mendy and Trent Alexander-Arnold. But what he lacked in attack, was compensated with his defensive ability.

A run in the Tottenham team could see Rose display all of the above once again. But in this moment of time, it is hard to imagine Pochettino ditching Davies for the Leeds United youth product.

TT Grade: B-

Ryan Bertrand

While Rose finds himself on the periphery, Bertrand, in contrast, is at the top of the food chain at Southampton — and rightly so.

He has been one of the leading left-backs in the Premier League over the last few seasons, performing exceptionally well in both halves of the pitch.

The 29-year-old has the pace to get past opposition right-backs and the crossing ability to whip dangerous balls into the box.

Most importantly, though, unlike a lot of modern-day full-backs, Bertrand is still a very capable defender on his day.

TT Grade: B+

TT Verdict:

All things considered, Rose is probably the better defender compared to Bertrand and has shown as much since Tottenham established themselves as one of the top teams in the Premier League back in the 2015/16 season.

However, form-wise, Bertrand edges it with Rose having struggled to find any sort of rhythm for some time now while the Southampton ace has been largely consistent, or at least compared to the majority of his Saints team-mates. Therefore, the former Chelsea man wins this battle.
