TT Battle: Gylfi Sigurdsson vs Dele Alli

Having recently lost 3-1 to Manchester City, Everton would not have wanted to come up against Tottenham in their next Premier League fixture.

Mauricio Pochettino’s men, who currently sit third in the table, are one of the division’s most in-form sides right now, showing how difficult Sunday could prove to be for the Toffees.

However, with a playmaker such as Gylfi Sigurdsson at disposal among others in this improved Everton squad, anything is possible.

As for Tottenham, Dele Alli is almost certain to be just one of many threats on the day when the London club make the trip to Goodison Park.

Gylfi Sigurdsson

Sigurdsson, an ex-Spurs player, has endured some difficult spells at Everton since joining from Swansea City for big money last summer.

This season, though, the 29-year-old has been largely impressive, producing the sort of performances that were often on display during his time at the Liberty Stadium.

Now playing in his preferred No.10 role, Sigurdsson has been so dangerous in positions in and around the area, firing threatening shots towards goal and playing accurate through balls into team-mates.

In Everton’s last couple of games, the Iceland international has not been at his best. However, overall, and especially compared to the last campaign, he has shone and is slowly starting to justify Farhad Moshiri’s decision to splash the cash on him.

Dele Alli

Things did not quite work out for Sigurdsson at Tottenham, but that has been far from the case with Alli who has been a revelation for the club since making his debut.

In the final third, you will not find too many players in the Premier League better than the incredibly productive 22-year-old.

Potent in front of goal, Alli is capable of finding the back of the net in a variety of ways with his heading ability just one tool in his locker when it comes to scoring.

On top of that, Alli is also a great provider with the relationship he has struck up with Harry Kane being almost telepathic.

At the £5m (BBC Sport) Daniel Levy paid MK Dons for the England international, Alli is one of the greatest bargains the Premier League era has ever seen.

TT Verdict:

Sigurdsson is a player with a lot of quality but, compared to Alli, it is not even a contest. The numbers the Tottenham man has produced over the last few seasons have been phenomenal.

Ultimately, in the end, Pochettino’s decision to get rid of Sigurdsson and build his team around an individual such as Alli was a brilliant one.

Without him, the north London outfit would be a much lesser side, a lesser side unable to challenge for the title in the way they have done under Pochettino.
