It has been a season to forget for Huddersfield Town in the Premier League.
The Terriers have been woeful from the very first weekend of the 2018/19 campaign and with just three wins to their name all year, it will be of no surprise if manager Jan Siewert decides to completely rebuild his squad in the summer.
One area that the German will be looking to bolster in particular is the goalkeeping position. According to the Sun on Sunday (via HITC), Huddersfield are considering a swoop for Sheffield Wednesday ace Keiren Westwood whose contract at Hillsborough expires in June.
Keeping this particular rumour in mind, let’s compare the Republic of Ireland international with one of the Terriers’ shot-stoppers…
There are not many goalkeepers at Championship level who can compete with Keiren Westwood when he is at his very best. The 34-year-old has been in sensational form for the Owls since Steve Bruce took over at the start of the year and has kept an impressive total of eight clean sheets in his last fourteen appearances.
His latest display for Wednesday was arguably his best of the season to date as he made a number of fantastic saves against Leeds United at Elland Road before the hosts finally broke the deadlock. Although he is entering the twilight of his career, it is overwhelmingly clear that Westwood is still more than good enough to play on a regular basis in the second tier and so he will be a valuable asset for any team at this particular level.
TT GRADE: A
With Huddersfield’s first-choice keeper Jonas Lossl’s contract expiring in June (via Transfermarkt), Siewert has been giving Ben Hamer a chance to impress ahead of the club’s return to the Championship next season. Unfortunately for the 31-year-old, he has yet to step up to the plate for the Terriers and instead has added to their struggles in the Premier League in recent weeks.
In his last three games alone, Hamer has conceded 10 goals and is clearly struggling from a lack of confidence in his own abilities which will be a huge concern for his manager. When you consider just how competitive the second tier can be, Huddersfield cannot be carrying any passengers in the 2019/20 campaign and so Siewert may have to make a decision regarding the goalkeeper situation at the John Smith’s Stadium.
TT GRADE: C-
If Huddersfield are serious about addressing a worrying lack of quality in their squad when the transfer window opens in July, they must sort out their goalkeeping woes.
Although it is fair to say that defensively the Terriers have been incredibly poor this season, they have not been helped by the presence of Hamer who in recent weeks has proved that he is not good enough to be a regular starter next year.
Therefore, if Westwood is available in the summer, Siewert should do everything possible to secure his signature as he could provide the foundations that could help the club thrive in the second tier.
