West Ham United fans will have been grateful for the addition of Lukasz Fabianski in the summer as the goalkeeper has proven to be a key individual in the side this season. A ‘keeper that is quite possibly under-rated by some, he has appeared to be one of their best signings in a summer that was full of acquisitions.
However, the Poland international is entering the final stages of his career and Manuel Pellegrini must start to think about a potential long-term alternative to the 33-year-old as the club look to continue their upward trajectory.
Andre Onana has been a named linked with the Hammers recently, but could he be the London Stadium outfit’s answer to replacing a player like Fabianski successfully? Let’s put the two together and take a look at each individual in this battle below…
As mentioned, Fabianski arrived in the summer when he joined West Ham from Swansea City for a fee for around £7.2million and it would be safe to say the club have not looked back.
The 33-year-old appears to have solved their concerns in the goalkeeper position brilliantly as he has managed to win the club a number of points this season as they look to start climbing the Premier League table and mount a challenge for the European places.
His contributions to the team have already earned him a status of being a fan favourite at the London Stadium, with many fans having called for him to win their Hammer of the Year award for his performances in between the sticks.
Despite his age, the £7.2m paid for him looks to have been money well spent, however, there must be concerns about how much longer he will be able to remain at the top of his game and help West Ham continue to improve further.

A report by De Telegraaf recently linked Andre Onana with a move to West Ham and based just on his performances for Ajax this season, he would be an excellent addition at the London Stadium.
The Cameroon international shot-stopper is one of the brightest goalkeeping talents to come through the game in recent years and has been winning plaudits with his displays in the Eredivisie and the Champions League – where he helped to keep Real Madrid at bay.
Valued at £31.5m, the 22-year-old has kept a 23 clean sheets in his 40 appearances so far this season, conceding just 28 goals in that time (Transfermarkt), showing that he already has a pair of safe hands.
Understandably, if he were to arrive at the London Stadium in the summer, he would likely want to go straight into the first-team and it would be hard for Pellegrini to deny him that opportunity, especially considering the amount of money the African talent could set West Ham back in terms of a transfer.
TT Grade: A
Fabianski has been world-class this season for West Ham and, as mentioned, has helped them to a number of points as they work their way up the Premier League table, however, Onana has been at another level for Ajax with his performances.
The 22-year-old has the potential to become a world-class shot-stopper in the near future and with the Poland international closing in on the latter stages of his career, he could be the ideal long-term replacement.
For that reason, Onana wins this battle and is a player that West Ham must strongly consider acquiring.
