Arsenal need a new centre-back this summer. There are no two ways about it. The Gunners are crying out for a solid defender that can help them to tighten things up at the back and stop the leaks from continuously happening.
If any proof was needed (although it shouldn’t be), the club’s faithful had to watch their side concede 51 goals in the Premier League this season… more than the likes of Wolves, Everton, Leicester City and Newcastle United! Truly awful viewing!
As the summer fast approaches, the rumour mill starts to work overtime and a number of names are starting to be churned out with possible switches to the Emirates Stadium. Mario Hermoso and Kostas Manolas’ names are two that have been recently circulated and look pretty good on paper.
However, if we were to compare the two men closely and put them up against each other in one of our ‘Transfer Battles’, when who would come out on top? Let’s take a look below…
The Daily Mail reported that Arsenal were interested in the Espanyol defender recently and it would be hard to ignore this one as Hermoso is certainly a player that would be able to strengthen the backline almost immediately.
He managed to keep the likes of Valencia and Atletico Madrid at bay in games this season as the La Liga outfit just missed out on a place within European football next year.
The centre-back, who is valued at £18million by Transfermarkt, can also play on the left-hand side of the defence and could provide Emery with an additional option if ever required.
The 23-year-old, who has been capped a handful of times by Spain recently, has been one of the standout enforcers in La Liga this season. He is blessed with tremendous amounts of pace that allow him to keep up with opposition attackers, whilst he is rather comfortable in the air.

Nicolo Schira, who is a journalist for La Gazzetta dello Sport, revealed on Twitter that Arsenal are really interested in signing AS Roma’s Manolas this summer and have already held talks with the player’s agent, Mino Raiola.
It is claimed that the defender will cost €36m (£31.7m) due to his release clause, however, he is a player that would seem to be worth every penny in the Gunners’ case.
The 27-year-old has been consistent throughout the entire campaign for Roma, whether that be in the Champions League or Serie A, and has proven to be a leader on the pitch with his performances. He is the type of player Emery can leave alone when it comes to his defensive duties as he is an individual that thrives upon them.
A brilliant defender, Manolas would be an instant upgrade on the options that the Premier League outfit can currently call upon and would certainly help the north London outfit to challenge for more if he were in the team.

As mentioned, a defender must be a priority for Arsenal this summer and if the aforementioned men are being lined up in the current transfer window, then they might just be able to sort out their problems once and for all.
However, in regards to the battle between the duo, Emery should be looking to bring Manolas to the Emirates Stadium as the Greece international enforcer is one that would be able to tick all the boxes required.
Consistent, experienced, reliable and a no-nonsense approach to defending is what Arsenal need and the 27-year-old is the man to bring that to north London.
Raul Sanllehi, give Emery Manolas this summer!
