West Ham United must surely target a striker (or two) in the summer if they are to improve and build on what they have managed to achieve so far in what must be considered a transitional campaign under Manuel Pellegrini.
Goals have been hard to come by for the Hammers and it has not been a surprise to see a number of names emerge as potential targets that the club could consider making offers for.
Moussa Marega and Edin Dzeko have just been a couple of names that have been mentioned, however, who would be better suited to the system that West Ham employ and who could be the man to find the goals on a regular basis.
Let’s take a closer look and compare the two hitmen…
Marega could be an ideal fit for West Ham as they look to find someone who is not shy of finding the back of the net. The Porto forward has been in fine form for the Portuguese outfit over the past couple of seasons, having recorded 23 goals last season and has followed up with 17 so far in this campaign.
The Mali international is an extremely powerful striker that is very good in the air, which could make him a useful target man as he can also hold off the defenders to allow his team-mates to join in with any potential attacks.
And, if defences did not think they had it hard enough, the 27-year-old has bundles of pace as well, which makes him really dangerous on counter-attacks and his movement of the ball makes him a real threat in and around the penalty area.
The way Marega plays would also suit the style of play that Pellegrini likes to adopt at the London Stadium, as the Chilean seems to favour using one striker in his team and something the current Porto star could thrive upon.
TT Grade: A-
Dzeko has previous knowledge of what working with Pellegrini and his system entails and that could be something West Ham thrive upon should the Bosnia international leave AS Roma in the summer – with reports having claimed the Serie A outfit could be prepared to cash in on him.
The 33-year-old has plenty of experience of playing in the Premier League and has shown that he is more than capable of being able to find the back of the net on a regular basis, whether that be for the Italians or Manchester City.
As like Marega, Dzeko would offer the Hammers a physical presence in the penalty box and would also give the likes of Felipe Anderson and Manuel Lanzini someone to target with potential crosses into the area.
However, there must be a real question as to whether the veteran striker would be worth bringing to the London Stadium, as he could be seen as a short-term fix rather than a long-term solution to their attacking roles.
TT Grade: B+
There is no doubt that both strikers should be considered by West Ham, especially if they are prepared to change all the options they have in the final third regarding the players who can spearhead their attack.
However, when taking in all the factors into account and the fact that it would be best for the Hammers to try and fix their problems with the long-term in mind, Marega must be identified as their main target this summer.
