TT Battle: Nathan Ake vs Andreas Christensen

This season, defensively, Chelsea have been absolutely shambolic at times – something which Bournemouth took full advantage of when the two sides met in January.

The Blues’ defensive frailties were on full display that night as they went on to lose 4-0 to Eddie Howe’s men and, according to reports, they could now look to their conquerors in an attempt to improve things at the back.

De Telegraaf (via TEAMtalk) reports Chelsea are weighing up the possibility of re-signing their former defender Nathan Ake in the summer, a move a lot of supporters would probably welcome.

Alongside Andreas Christensen, another Chelsea academy product, Ake could help form a world-class central defensive partnership at Stamford Bridge for years to come.

Nathan Ake

Since moving to Bournemouth permanently last summer after an initial successful loan spell with the club, Ake has developed into quite the centre-half.

Looking at his attributes, he would fit in seamlessly into Maurizio Sarri’s side should the Italian still be Chelsea manager next season.

On the ball, he is so calm and composed, constantly looking to play his way out of trouble.

Meanwhile, when trying to regain possession, he is just as effective. The 24-year-old tackles well and is strong in the air for a centre-back whose game is not based on height and power.

Chelsea, of course, still have that transfer ban hanging over them. But if they can get it pushed back, then Ake should definitely be on their list of targets.

Andreas Christensen

Like Ake, Christensen is also a central defender who loves to play the ball out of defence.

Unfortunately for the Denmark international, though, he has not had a lot of opportunities to show that this season with Sarri set on a central defence of David Luiz and Antonio Rudiger.

Going forward, however, that partnership is probably not one that can continue if Chelsea want to be a serious team.

Instead, a combination of Christensen and Ake or Christensen and someone else looks the way to go with the 22-year-old being a much better defender than his current rivals.

Christensen does not commit silly fouls like Luiz and Rudiger, while his reading of the game is on another level. He steps out at the right time to make crucial interceptions and stop attacks.

That ability to sniff out danger and deal with it is something Chelsea are missing right now.

TT Verdict:

Taking into account some of the individual performances from Chelsea’s defenders this season, they could really do with someone like Ake right now.

Of late, neither Luiz nor Rudiger, who started the campaign strongly, have impressed with the former only likely to decline from this point on.

Considering that, bringing in Ake, a very similar centre-half to Christensen both in terms of style and ability or someone else, has to be a priority for the Blues.
