TT Battle: Thomas Strakosha vs Hugo Lloris

It would not be too surprising if some Tottenham Hotspur fans were a little concerned with how some of their players have played over the last few months, especially considering how results have recently started to go against them in the Premier League.

One man that may have caused some mixed feelings in amongst those at Spurs is Hugo Lloris, as the goalkeeper has had a rather mixed-bag when it comes to the performances he produces at times, having cost the club valuable points in the process and with the club vying for a spot in the top four, his displays need to be as solid as ever.

Thomas Strakosha has been linked as a possible replacement for the France World Cup winner, but would he be an ideal replacement for the ageing Frenchman?

Let’s take a closer look below by comparing both men…

Hugo Lloris

There is no denying that on his day, Lloris could be considered one of the best goalkeepers in the Premier League – however, those days can be few and far between at times as he produces some rather erratic showings.

All ‘keepers are liable to making the odd mistake at times, but the 32-year-old has made some high-profile gaffs in recent months as the pressure appears to be building on Tottenham and Mauricio Pochettino’s side in their quest for a place in the top four.

Whether the Frenchman’s performances have come as a result of a lack of competition in north London is a factor – although Paulo Gazzaniga has started to emerge as an excellent deputy this season – the arrival of some quality to the position could help to enhance his own standards and bring the very best back out of him.

However, blunders appear to have become an unfortunate characteristic of Lloris’ game recently, with a number of cheap goals having been conceded with shots that many at Spurs would have expected the ‘keeper to have been able to deal with.

Thomas Strakosha

The SS Lazio goalkeeper has recently been linked with a move to Tottenham by Calciomercato and it would be hard to argue against the idea that the Premier League outfit should move for the Albania international in the summer.

Valued at £18million (Transfermarkt), the 23-year-old has been in red-hot form for the Serie A side this season, keeping nine clean sheets in his 33 matches across all competitions, conceding just 35 goals (Transfermarkt).

Despite still being young, Strakosha has plenty of first-team experience already and has a number of excellent attributes that he could continue to further develop at Spurs under Pochettino’s – and even Lloris’- guidance.

He is very comfortable with the ball at his feet – a modern trait a manager appears to look for in a goalkeeper – whilst he can start attacks from his own penalty area with his distribution. Although he is 6’3” tall, he can still deal with crosses into the box effectively as he is extremely agile, which also works in his favour in terms of the reflexes he possesses.

TT Grade: A-

The Verdict:

Both men are extremely talented goalkeepers, although Strakosha must take the win in this particular battle.

The Albania international has emerged as a quality shot-stopper with his performances for Lazio over the last few seasons and possesses all the modern day traits a number of managers see ideal in their goalkeepers.

Spurs must look towards the future when considering Lloris as well, with the shot-stopper advancing towards the final stages of his career, Pochettino must think about upgrading the position if he is to finally bring a trophy or two to the club in the near future.
