Tottenham have had one of, if not the best defence in the Premier League over the past few seasons.
The rocks in the middle of that defence are the Belgian duo of Toby Alderweireld and Jan Vertonghen, who have proven to be not only two of the best defenders in the league, but in the world.
With that in mind, let’s compare these two transfers…
Tottenham signed Alderweireld from Atlético Madrid in the summer of 2015 for a deal believed to be £14.4m, after the player had spent a season with Southampton. He had proven to be a class act and Spurs quickly made the swoop for him.
His career at Tottenham instantly took off, and he became a belligerent force at the back in a great season for Spurs. This resulted in him earning Player of the Year, and making the PFA Team of the Year.
The following season was equally impressive, as he was making his mark on the Premier League, and raising his hand as one of the leading centre-backs on the planet.
However, the increased transfer rumours surrounding the player marred his performances last season, as well as a long-term injury. Rumours linking him to Man United caused a fallout with Mauricio Pochettino and it looked certain for him to go in the summer.
Nevertheless, he stayed, but is yet to sign a new contract, as his career looks unclear. A brilliant signing and a wonderful player on the field, it is what has gone on off the field that has tarnished this transfer.

The 25-year-old had just been awarded the Dutch Footballer of the Year award, and there was a lot of expectation from him at White Hart Lane. He was joining a Tottenham team that had a lot of talent further up the field, but were one or two players short of a good defence.
Six years later and he has lived up to that expectation. He has played almost 250 games for The Lilywhites, twice being a member of the PFA Team of the Year, as well as being Tottenham’s current Player of the Season.
This has been a very good signing for Spurs, and is a player who has seen Tottenham develop into a serious force in the Premier League.

During his time at Tottenham, Alderweireld has looked to be the best centre-back in the world. However, his time has also been defined by injuries and a poor attitude that has led to rifts with Pochettino.
Meanwhile, Vertonghen has got on with his job, and become a fan-favourite for The Lilywhites. It is for that reason why Vertonghen wins this battle.
