Transfer Battle: Morgan Gibbs-White vs Emile Smith-Rowe

Wolverhampton Wanderers have been one of the surprise packages in the Premier League this season, while Arsenal have come on leaps and bounds under Unai Emery.

The Gunners are currently in with a shout of securing a top four spot if they can continue to ensure consistency, while Wolves have slipped down the table having suffered a dip in form recently.

Interestingly, this season has seen a couple of youngsters really come under the spotlight for both of these clubs, with Emile Smith-Rowe looking impressive in his limited appearances in the Europa League and EFL Cup, and Morgan Gibbs-White showing his quality in the Premier League.

With that in mind, let’s compare these two transfers…

Morgan Gibbs-White joined Wolves aged 8 and has played for the club’s academy at all age groups. He made his first-team debut as a substitute in the FA Cup back in January of last year and is now a regular feature in the Premier League under Nuno Espirito Santo.

Indeed, the central midfielder was a part of the England team that won the 2017 FIFA U-17 World Cup. He managed to grab two goals in the competition, including one in the final, so it’s safe to say he has a bright future ahead of him.

The Englishman has established himself as one of the hottest prospects in English football during his substitute appearances and starts in the EFL Cup this season, with his most impressive performance coming against Tottenham Hotspur in the Premier League recently.

Emile Smith-Rowe joined Arsenal’s Hale End Academy in 2010 at the age of ten. He made his first appearance for the Under-23s at the age of 16 and then went on to make his competitive first-team debut on the 20th of September 2018 against Vorskla Poltava in the Europa League after an impressive pre-season.

However, the youngster is still waiting for his first Premier League appearance for the Gunners, but he has managed to amass two goals this season, which came in the EFL Cup and the Europa League.

The attacking midfielder hasn’t necessarily been given a large amount of chances to excel in the first team ranks, but he has shown plenty of promise and quality when called upon.

When comparing these two, it’s clear to see that Morgan Gibbs-White is enjoying more minutes on the field this season, with Smith-Rowe having to wait for cup competitions to get his chance under Emery.

The Wolves man has more minutes under his belt and has impressed in the Premier League this season, so you could say he’s currently ahead of Smith-Rowe in terms of experience and progression.

But, the Arsenal man has already managed to contribute during his limited amount of appearances for the Gunners, which has certainly helped their push for silverware at the Emirates.

Both players have a very bright future ahead of them and will no doubt go on to receive England call-ups, but right now Gibbs-White edges it as Smith-Rowe is still yet to prove himself in the Premier League.
