Liverpool are due to host Bundesliga champions Bayern Munich later on today in the first stage of the Champions League’s round of 16.
Bayern, who, by their own standards, are doing fairly poor this season – trailing current league leaders Borussia Dortmund by some margin – will be relying on the Champions League as one of the few remaining realistic chances for silverware.
Providing they perform against Jurgen Klopp’s Liverpool, of course. Indeed, the Anfield chief is a known rival for those at the Allianz Arena during his time in the Bundesliga and has already lost a Champions League final to the Bavarian giants in his career, so revenge will certainly be on the cards.
Both sides will be looking towards their star forwards Roberto Firmino and Robert Lewandowski to provide when it matters – but who will be most confident of a result?
Since making the move over from Germany, Firmino has established himself as one of the finest false 9s in the world.
Everything about his game compliments Klopp’s philosophy. He’s tireless in possession, skilful and technically gifted. He creates countless opportunities for his fellow attacking teammates Sadio Mane and Mohamed Salah and has a style of dogged play which sees him through the tightest of spots.
For us, he is the model modern forward. And, though he hasn’t quite hit the dizzying heights of last season, 11 goals in 4 assists really isn’t bad going.
TT Verdict: A-
There’s no other way to put it, Poland international Robert Lewandowski is seriously good.
The big forward uses his physical presence to bully defenders at any given opportunity and has developed an incredibly sophisticated footballing brain to allow him to predict opportunities inside the box before they’ve even happened. He’s creative, tall, capable in the air, and truly lethal front of goal with both feet.
Not to mention the five goals he scored in nine minutes.
Despite Bayern’s shortcomings this year, Lewandowski has managed a very respectable 24 goals and 9 assists in 28 games – putting him amongst the most effective forwards in the world.
TT Rating: A+
It’s a tough one but Robert Lewandowski takes it for us.
There’s really nothing this player can’t do in the offensive half, and where Firmino is undoubtedly skilled in almost every department, he falls behind in terms of his finishing ability.
Don’t be surprised if Bayern’s star man grabs a goal in game coming up.Like what the TT have on offer? Sign up for more notifications!
