TT Flashback: When Tottenham bottled the Premier League

Whilst a lot of Tottenham fans will look back on the 2015/16 season as the first campaign where they showed signs of being a side that can win silverware, it was a season that ended in heartbreak. The Lilywhites were chasing Leicester City in the Premier League title race, and when they lost 1-0 away at West Ham it was a result that rocked them.

Having previously beaten the Hammers 4-1 that season at White Hart Lane, the fans believed that they could record a routine win over the Irons at Upton Park and make up more ground on the Foxes, who had dropped points themselves that game week. However, it just wasn’t to be and they were left devastated as Michail Antonio bagged an early goal which Slaven Bilic’s side held on to.

It was at the full-time whistle in that clash that a lot of the supporters believed that their title hopes were over. If they couldn’t capitalise on Leicester dropping points by beating West Ham then they didn’t think they had what it takes to win the title, even if they did run the King Power faithful close. That season was a memorable one for all involved, and it will be remembered by the Lilywhites as the one where they bottled it after coming so close.

The Lilywhites all knew that they’d blown a golden opportunity when they lost at Upton Park that season, and they didn’t know how right they were.
