It’s that time of the season when one transfer could spark many transfers, activity is increasing by the day and the domino effect of one big money move sends chairmen, chequebooks and managers into overdrive. Here is the latest instalment…
It appears that Robert Pires’ move to Aston Villa will be completed this week, a strange move given his age and Villa’s plethora of attacking wide men. The question is, what does this mean for the current crop at Villa Park? Is Ashley Young set to depart?
Arsene Wenger AND Harry Redknapp have both expressed an interest in Young, who has stated his need to win trophies and play in the Champions League. As Pires departs Arsenal’s training ground, could Young be about to move to the Emirates in a January transfer swoop??
Reports suggest that Spurs, who may try to attract Young in a swap deal, are willing to let Aaron Lennon be sold to raise funds to buy either Young (if the Arsenal deal falls through) or to bring in Steven Pienaar from Everton. The Pienaar swap deal with Niko Kranjcar – or even out of favour David Bentley – could happen as both clubs try to satisfy contracts, wages and manager’s squad demands. In addition, Liverpool are apparently monitoring the situation with both Young and Lennon, in an attempt to solve their own creative problems.
It’s not yet certain how much Young could leave Villa for, or what price Spurs want for Lennon, but it is certain that January looks set to be very busy, and wingers are top of the shopping list.
