The Daily Star has Manchester United fans smiling even more than the moment after Steven Gerrard’s slip here in the Football Transfer Tavern.
The reason for this is the claim that soon-to-be Red Devils manager Louis van Gaal has named his first two summer transfer targets – Kevin Strootman and Toni Kroos.
Our punters point out that Bayern Munich midfielder Kroos has long been linked with a switch to Old Trafford, yet we certainly fancy the Red Devils’ chances of landing him a far bit more now than when David Moyes was at the helm and the ship was sinking without a trace!
The second of the targets is Roma midfielder Kevin Strootman, who van Gaal knows well from the Dutch international scene. Strootman has been linked with a move to the Premier League a fair few times now.
One of our punters makes the point that these signings clearly show that United mean business and they will not come cheap.
Despite this, we think that United are on the road to recovery, and a campaign without the distraction of Champions League football next term could well allow them to fight for the title – if they are not busy on Thursday nights that is!
Will van Gaal’s prestige help the club to land the likes of Kroos and Strootman this summer? Let us know your thoughts below.
