The Newcastle fans in the Transfer Tavern have been responding to the news (from the Chronicle) that Paul Dummett has turned down a call-up to Ryan Giggs’ Wales squad because he wants to focus on his Newcastle career. The 26-year-old left-back came through the Magpies academy system and has been a consistent member of the first team since the 2013/14 season.
The Newcastle fans propping up our bar will already be fond of their Welsh defender for his commitment and passion to the club. Although with the recent news that he’s turned down international football to focus on his career at St James Park, his stock is set to rise further among the Geordies. Dummett has missed a number of games this season with a hamstring injury that kept him out for four months between August and December, although since his return he’s made appearances in Newcastle’s last 11 Premier League games.
Dummett will have to be on top form if he is to help Rafa Benitez side avoid relegation just a year after the won promotion from the Championship. The Northeast club currently sit 13th in the table and look fairly comfortable going into the last eight games of the season. Although the Toon Army still sit eight points off of the magic 40 point mark that’s tipped to be enough to stay up.
Here’s our resident Geordies’ verdict on Dummett:
This is the type of player we want. Polar opposite to that work shy Michael Owen.
