The Arsenal fans in the Transfer Tavern are hoping for a swift resolution to their managerial situation, and recent reports suggest the appointment of Wenger’s successor could be on the imminent horizon.
Towards the end of last week it appeared that Mikel Arteta was the hot-favourite to succeed Wenger at the Emirates Stadium, but reports emerging from Sky Sports yesterday suggest that he could face competition from Unai Emery. According to the report, Emery held talks with Arsenal yesterday regarding the vacant position at the club and, considering he has a rich history in European football, it would hardly be surprising if he tipped Arteta to the job.
If Emery is eventually appointed by the club this summer then the Spaniard must use his previous experience at PSG as a starting point for transfers. PSG’s squad is littered with talent of the highest quality – especially in attacking positions – but one player who slightly goes under the radar is Layvin Kurzawa (valued at £19.8 million by Transfermarkt).
The French left-back was forced to share responsibilities with Yuri Berchiche for the entirety of the previous campaign under Emery, so he could be tempted by a move away from the club this summer in order to cement his place as a first-team regular within a different environment.
Although Nacho Monreal was one of Arsenal’s standout performers during Wenger’s final season as manager, it seems abundantly clear that he is below the level that is required to enable the club return to the top-four next season. With that in mind, Emery should add Kurzawa to his shortlist for the summer, as he possesses the physical capability and the technical attributes that are needed to thrive as a marauding full-back in the Premier League.
With 5 goals and 4 assists to his name in all-competitions last season, there’s no doubt Kurzawa would also offer Arsenal a potent threat in the final-third, so the club would be foolish not to finance a deal for his services if Emery takes the reigns in North London.
