Unai Emery’s refusal to rule out Reiss Nelson return hints that Hoffenheim spell could be cut short

Arsenal’s breadth of attacking players have combined to devastating effect at times this season, and with Reiss Nelson excelling in the Bundesliga it’s an exciting time to be an Arsenal fan.

Indeed, the Gunners are renowned for producing talent of the highest quality in their academy ranks, and in Nelson it seems that they have their next big success story on their hands.

After thriving in the U23 squad last season by notching 9 goals and providing 3 assists in 11 fixtures, Nelson moved to Hoffenheim this summer in a bid to kick-start his senior career.

While Nelson has been widely tipped to blossom into an incredibly potent attacker, nobody would have predicted him to start his career in Germany with the level of conviction he has shown.

With 5 goals already to his name from just 6 appearances, including a brace against Nuremberg in October, speculation regarding a premature return to north London is beginning to intensify.

According to a report from Goal, Emery was recently asked if there was any possibility of the 18-year-old wonderkid being recalled in January, to which he replied: “At the moment we don’t speak about that.”

Naturally, Emery’s response was a classic example of managers refusing to be drawn into speculation on sensitive subjects, but the fact he refused to rule out a move when he was presented with an opportunity to do so suggests a return is not beyond the realms of possibility.

If Emery wasn’t even entertaining the prospect of bringing Nelson back to Arsenal in January, he would have firmly quashed speculation before it snowballs into an unwanted topic of conversation in the media.

With that being said, it would appear that Emery is likely to assess his injury concerns when the January window comes round and, if he believes Nelson is needed at the club, he will recall him ahead of time.

And considering Nelson’s form since arriving at Hoffenheim, there is no doubt his return would be a major boost for the club in their bid to return to the Champions League this season.
