Under fire Newcastle owner meets with boss for crunch talks, could be pivotal to club’s future

It’s been a miserable season for the Newcastle United fans in the Transfer Tavern, having watched their expensively assembled side succumb to one of the most avoidable relegations of all time.

The Toon Army may be facing a season in the Championship next term, though a 5-1 win over Tottenham Hotspur was a fine way to sign off what has been a terrible season in the North East.

While the drop will no doubt have major effects on the Magpies, our resident Geordies are hoping and praying that manager Rafa Benitez remains in charge after seeing the Spaniard’s impact on the side already.

According to Sky Sports, under fire owner Mike Ashley has met with the former Real Madrid boss this evening as attempts to get him to stay begin in earnest.

He signed a three-year deal in March, though there is an exit clause in his contract that allows him to leave in case of relegation.

However, he has revealed he is open to the idea of staying on Tyneside if the conditions are right.

‘My heart is saying yes – great club, great city and opportunity – but you have to use your brain too,’ said the 56-year old.

“I said before that I was expecting a great atmosphere, but it has been amazing. Even more positive than I was expecting. We still have to sit down and talk. I want the best for Newcastle United and the best for me. That’s simple.”

Do you think Benitez will be in charge in the Championship? If so, could he win it?
