Manchester City

Underdog Bites Back

Could this be the season perpetual underdogs Manchester City usurp Manchester United as the best team in Manchester? After a number of electrifying and closely fought battles last season in both the Premier League and Carling Cup semi final this season promises to deliver an even more heated and closely contested battle between the two Manchester clubs.

Manchester City have spent £60 million on new signings already since the end of last season including World Cup winner David Silva and are still looking to recruit more players to join their ever growing list big names at the club. In contrast to City’s unabated spending spree United have been much more reserved and conservative in the transfer market with Alex Ferguson hinting that he may not make any additions to his squad, though funds are thought to be available.

I imagine Manchester United fans feel like an older brother who has picked on a younger brother for years, but when the younger brother hit puberty he turned into a super strong giant and then the older brother could only sit and wait for his inevitable comeuppance in return for his years of abuse.

I think its only a matter of time before Manchester City overtake United in terms of the quality, strength and depth of the squads of the two teams as a result of the sheer spending power that City have at their disposal.

There are many different factors that will affect who will come out on top such as if Wayne Rooney can rediscover his form from last season that was strikingly absent during the World Cup (pun intended) and how well Manchester City’s team can gel together with all its new recruits, but I have a feeling that there may be an eventual shift in the balance of power and the ‘noisy neighbours’ at Manchester City could be the team cheering loudest at the end of the season!
