Newcastle United completed the signing of Ki Sung-yueng from Swansea this week, in a piece of business that could turn out to be one of the bargains of the summer.
With Merino leaving the club for Sociedad, Benitez needed a midfield pass-master to step in. While some may think that Mohamed Diame should come in and fill the space left by Merino, Ki Sung-yueng is the pass maestro that is going to light up St James’ Park.
The South Korean has been a classy midfielder ever since he joined Swansea from Celtic in 2012. Since Ki became a regular for Swansea and was crucial in creating Swansea’s attractive passing game. In Rafa Benitez’s Newcastle system, it’s crucial to have two midfielders capable of playing the ball forward. Where Ki might struggle to do a defensive job, a combo of Shelvey and Ki could provide Benitez with the ideal passing duo.
If Newcastle can give the midfielder some targets up front to find, Ki could provide to be a superb distributor. Even if Ki doesn’t start every game, he’ll give the Toon crucial depth as they go into next season.
