The Manchester Evening News has reported that Manchester United and rivals Manchester City are set to battle it out for Liverpool’s Fernando Torres. The £40m rated Spaniard looks certain to leave Liverpool sooner or later with the club struggling on and off the pitch.
The last year or so has been a struggle for Torres with injuries and a loss of form, coupled with the club’s situation with their owners. Despite that he still has an outstanding goal scoring record for Liverpool, with fifty seven goals in eighty six league games. On his day he is one of the best in the world and a nightmare for any defender. Though he’d be a great asset to any side, there’s not a cat in hell’s chance I see him going to Old Trafford.
If David Gill is to be believed and Fergie really does have a £165m transfer kitty (I don’t believe him) then I don’t see Liverpool accepting a bid from their most hated rivals anyway. And I don’t think Torres is the type to go to a rival club as he respects Liverpool and their fans.
Though there’s no doubt City can afford him, and would probably take him given the chance, I still wonder whether Torres would join another Premiership club.
But when he leaves his options are a little slim if he’s going to keep his integrity. He can’t sign for another Premiership club due to his loyalty to Liverpool. He can’t go to Real Madrid or Barcelona due to his loyalty to Atletico Madrid. And there’s probably only Inter Milan in Italy who could afford him.
Two things are for certain. He’s going to leave, even if the club is sold, as he wants Champions League football. And he won’t be going to United, not until hell freezes over anyway.
