First it was Graeme Souness that suggested that everyone’s (no-one’s) favourite foul mouthed striker should quit Old Trafford this Summer, and now former United hero Peter Schmeichel has suggested the same, just what is it about Wayne Rooney?
It would be expected that anyone connected with Manchester United would not be too keen on the forward going anywhere, especially now that he is rediscovering his form, but in an interview with Danish media, the former United stopper has suggested just that.
The goalkeeper, who played for United between 1991 and 1999, was discussing how it could potentially help the players career to move abroad in order to get out of the media spot light. If his antics last weekend were anything to go by, his so called ‘critics’ in the media are really getting to him, so maybe Schmeichel has a point.
The Great Dane told Ekstra Bladet:
“Wayne could leave United and it would be good for him to get away….Maybe to Real Madrid under Jose Mourinho – someone who could handle him and get the best out of him….It’s painful to say that the best player you have is better off trying something new. United will probably not sell him to another English club, but I do think a change of scenery would help Wayne.”.
The United legend speaks a lot of sense really. Obviously it would be a massive blow for United to lose Wayne Rooney, and Sir Alex Ferguson has done a fantastic job of protecting him, however in the past it has not stopped the Old Trafford club from moving on players that were perhaps bringing too much negative attention to the club even though they were on the top of their games.
It is also worth noting that most of the time when these players do move on, they never really recapture the form they showed under the tutelage of Sir Alex and his coaching staff, obviously there is an exception to that rule currently lighting up the Bernabeu.
I personally think Rooney quiting Old Trafford this Summer is unlikely, but Peter Schmeichel does speak sense in some ways. Something has got to give at some point, either the forward has to calm down and learn from his mistakes or Manchester United have to sell him, because at some point further down the line as he continues to be so heavily scrutinised, things could get ugly again and that will ultimately reflect badly on the club.
If a move abroad can take him out of the spotlight and get him back to doing what it is does best, I think it could ultimately be beneficial for both the player and his current club. Any transfer fee would be massive and it would allow Sir Alex to strengthen his squad greatly, as Schmeichel says he wouldn’t be sold to an English club, so the chances are the only side that could afford him would be Real Madrid, and after Ferguson, Jose Mourinho is probably the best person in world football for handling someone of Rooney’s temperament.
